As Lewis’s brother Warren (“Warnie”) put it, “There were no rules, officers, agendas, or formal elections.” Lewis was the central figure, and others in it were mostly Tolkien invited Lewis to join his “Kolbitars” society in the 1920s — a group that grew to become The Inklings, a fellowship of storytellers and bards who reviewed each other’s literary pursuits at a local pub every Tuesday. While Lewis’ output was prodigious, Tolkien’s was ponderous. Humphrey Carpenter’s “The Inklings” recounts the Oxford University literary club whose members included J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Owen Barfield, among many others, that met at the Eagle and Child Pub between the early 1930s and late 1949. From 1917-1920, C.S. Lewis attended Oxford, then onward from 1925 taught as a Fellow at the university’s Magdalen College (pronounced “maudlin”) until his departure in 1954. Lewis and Tolkien first met in 1926 at a Merton College English Faculty meeting.
